Káma-Kapúska! Making Marks in Indian Country, 1833–34

Project Narrative note 5

Not privy or attentive to the cultural knowledge that James Kipp or Awatíkihu leaders shared, Catlin, Audubon, and Wimar all misinterpreted much of what they witnessed regarding Native cultures along the Missouri River, with Catlin going so far as to fictionalize aspects of his experiences. See Kathryn S. Hight, “‘Doomed to Perish’: George Catlin’s Depictions of the Mandan,” Art Journal 49, no. 2 (Summer 1990): 119–24; as well as Kristine Ronan, “Buffalo Dancer: The Biography of an Image” (PhD diss., University of Michigan, 2016), https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027.42/133439.
