Leanne Zalewski is a doctoral candidate at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, specializing in nineteenth-century European painting and sculpture. Her dissertation, "The Rise and Fall of Bouguereau, Cabanel, Gérôme and Meissonier in Paris and New York," examines the phenomenon of the success, the rise to prominence, and the domination of the contemporary art scene in France by these four artists. It also traces their impact on the art scene in the United States, their eventual eclipse, first in France, then in the United States, and finally the swift decline of their posthumous reputations in both countries.
