With this
issue, Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide is embarking on its
third year of publication. Though still in our infancy, we are growing
up fast. Recently, we were informed that both Art Index and BHA have
agreed to index NCAW, which suggests that we have already reached
an impressive level of maturity. |

For this, we need to thank you, our
authors, our peer reviewers, and our readers. You all have been very
supportive and enthusiastic and this certainly has been beneficial
to our rapid development. We are also grateful to Sura Levine, our
promotions manager, who has pursued the indexing goal with energy
and tenacity. |

Funding for the journal continues
to be a challenge. We are delighted, therefore, that the Fine Art
Dealers Association (FADA) has renewed their generous grant to NCAW.
We are also grateful for the continued support of Michael Schwartz,
Director of Gallery Michael, Seton Hall University, the University
of Minnesota, and the University of the South, as well as for a generous
gift from Dr. and Mrs. Gabriel P. Weisberg. |

We are happy to present you in this issue with
five articles that range geographically from England via France to
Poland and that demonstrate a variety of methodologies and approaches.
The issue also features an impressive group of reviews of books and
exhibitions that cover such diverse subjects as Vuillard, Manet and
Spain, the Australian artist Charles Conder, and the marriage of science
and the visual arts. |

Our sincere thanks go to Robert Alvin Adler, Elizabeth
Allen, and Janet Whitmore, the copy-editors of this issue, as well
as to our web designer Emily Pugh, for getting vol. 3, no. 1 into
its finished form. |
